From Saut du Bouchot to Saut de la Bourrique

There are numerous waterfalls on the slopes of the Vosges mountains. These include the Saut du Bouchot and the Saut de la Bourrique. These two waterfalls can be visited on a long walk, which is shown here. There are many advantages to this route, with unique views at Moyemont and Rocher des Ducs, but there is also cultural interest with a passage at Falaise de Lyris. A large part of the hike is through forest.

Description of the walk

Park in the Saut du Bouchot car park.

Red disc markings

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the road on the left and follow the second track at the bend. After a steep slope, you will arrive at the edge of a clearing.

(1) Continue straight ahead. Then stay on the right-hand path until you cross the Bouchot via the Maraudé Bridge. Stay on the path until you reach the road.

(2) Climb up to the next crossroads.

No markings

Stay on the departmental road, then climb steeply up Chemin de la Fesnel. At the end, turn left twice onto Chemin la Croix la Houblivière.

Red disc markings

Stay on this path until you reach the pass.

(3) Head to the ridge on the right, towards Roche des Ducs. You will come to a hut.

(4) Climb up opposite, towards Roche des Ducs and Trou du Baheu. At the fork, take the second right towards the cave.

(5) Return to the previous crossroads and climb left towards the rock. Take care on some of the more technical sections, but there are cables. Climb two ledges to reach Roche des Ducs and its viewpoint.

(6) Continue along the path on the ridge to reach a fork, which is not marked on IGN maps.

No markings

Continue downhill, then take a track that climbs back up to the left towards the marked trail.

Red disc markings

Stay on the path until you reach a crossroads on the ridge.

(7) Stay on this path. At the end of the track, first turn left then right twice to reach a wide path.

(8) Follow it to the left. Pass the houses of Pré Jean des Houx to reach a road, then turn right to Col de Sapois.

Yellow disc markings

(9) Continue along the road, descending towards Gérardmer, until you reach the first path.

Red disc markings

(10) Descend to the right towards Saut de la Bourrique. At the track, first turn left then right to reach the waterfall.

(11) Climb back up to the road via the same route.

(10) Go straight ahead and ignore a path on the right. At the path, go left until you reach the bend.

Yellow disc markings

Go straight ahead, make a hairpin turn and continue to the path at the end of the trail, at Haut du Phény.

(12) First turn left then right to reach a wide forest path.

(13) Keep left. There is a hut on the right. Continue along this single track until you reach the sign for hill 976.

(14) Keep left towards Haut des Courts. Then turn left towards this pass.

Red disc markings

(15) Keep heading towards La Sotière. Stay on this track until you reach the site, always going straight ahead.

Blue ring markings

(16) Follow the track to the left, then the Chambre du Loup path to the right. At the crossroads, turn right. The path goes around the rocky area via the Chambre du Loup.

(17) Continue, passing in front of the Falaise de Lyris, and when you return to the crossroads, take the same path you took on the way there to La Sotière.

(16) Go straight ahead to the road.

No markings

Go down it to reach a shelter and a viewpoint.

Yellow disc markings

(18) Pass the viewpoint and stay on the path until you reach a large crossroads.

Red disc markings

(19) Head straight ahead towards Haut du Tot. Take the first path on the left down to the stream, ignoring all the paths on the right.

Yellow ring markings

(20) Cross the stream and climb back up into the forest. Leave the path to Peupré on your right and, at the next fork, take this path. Keep left at the next crossroads until you reach the second one.

Green triangle markings

Keep left towards the Moyemont orientation table.

(21) Return to the previous crossroads.

Blue easel marker

Take the path on the left, then left again. Then keep to the right until the end of the path. Follow a grassy path to the left, before making a hairpin bend to reach the road leading to Dramont.

(22) Turn completely right. Then stay on the track opposite, then left. Continue to a large path on the right.

(23) Descend to the left twice into the Droit de Sapois. After a steep descent, turn right, then left to arrive at La Hazelle.

(24) Continue left towards Sapois until you reach a fork.

Red Cross markings

Go right to cross a river. At the street, go straight ahead, then right to the hairpin bend. Turn right again to reach a dead end. Go down it to the D23.

(25) Cross carefully and take a first turn right then left to rejoin the Saut du Bouchot trail. Continue to the waterfall, then climb back up to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk with some beautiful stretches through the forest and stunning views, particularly from the Roche des Ducs. There are a few sections along minor roads where you need to watch out for traffic, but they aren’t too busy. As for the difficulty, it’s mainly down to the distance; I don’t think it warrants a ‘very difficult’ rating as the elevation gain is modest at 720m. Best done in good weather, as the route is shaded and the ground can be slippery.
