Ashbury walks

This walk combines one of the best sections of the Ridgeway and the start of the Lambourn Valley Way with visits to two ancient monuments. It is easy walking; the paths are either well-made or on well-drained chalk downland.

This circular walk starts from Lambourn and goes via Baydon Hole, Bailey Hill and Near Down.

The Lambourn Valley Way is a delightful 32km (20 mile) mile walk, from the Ridgeway at Uffington Castle to Newbury. This circular walk goes from Lambourn to the Ridgeway past Ashdown House, along the Ridgeway past the ancient monuments of Wayland's Smithy and Uffington Castle, and returns to Lambourn along the Lambourn Valley Way. The route "The Lambourn Valley Way, from Lambourn to Newbury (with shorter options)" describes the continuation of this walk to Newbury.

Start the walk at the Market Square, note the old Market Cross and the site of the Lambourn Tanker Crash of 1953, and enjoy the river and countryside around Lambourn.

A lovely walk with much variety and interest : wild flower meadow, Watts Bank Nature Reserve, superb views of the Eastbury Downs and Lambourn nestled in the Lambourn Valley, the pretty little village of Eastbury, which has many buildings of historic interest and the Lambourn River, a seasonal chalk stream.
This walk goes up (and down) several hills and can be slippery underfoot after rain.

This is a walk through woodlands and along the open fields to the South-East of Lambourn.

Along this walk, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful view of Lambourn from, a delightful cottage with a beautifully kept garden and to go through Ox Wood.

This walk brings you through Eastbury and Sheepdrove and gives fine views of the downs towards the Ridgeway. Then, it goes past a number of gallops, where you may see racehorses exercising.

Starting at the market square this walk takes you through Lynch wood to Upper Lambourn and then onto the fields above Lambourn and back via the Folly.

The Lambourn Valley Way is a delightful 32km (20 mile) mile walk, from the Ridgeway at Uffington Castle to Newbury. This route describes the second part of this walk, from Lambourn to Newbury, including an optional visit to Donnington Castle. It mostly follows the bank of the River Lambourn or the route of the dismantled Lambourn Valley Railway.

This circular walk brings you will be able to enjoy on a clear day, views across the countryside to Letcombe Bassett, Letcombe Regis, Wantage and even Didcot.

A short bracing walk which heads uphill for the first half.

Although just outside the valley, this walk gives access to very different countryside, with a number of features of interest, some lovely views and snowdrops and bluebells at the right time of year. The walk includes a number of steepish hills.

The Ridgeway the other way. The National Trail from NE to SW. The Stage 6 is a short walk as you will probably have to continue a bit further to get a place to stay and maybe head to Swindon or Trowbridge for onward travel. The countryside is a mixture of arable land, changing colour with the seasons, and areas of sheep or cattle grazed grassland. Some of the best views are from Smeathe’s Ridge as you climb gently up to Barbury Castle.
