Charolais bocage between Bourbince and Arconce

A lovely, peaceful walk through the Charolais countryside. The route has almost no traffic and very little tarmac. You’ll pass through beautiful forests accompanied by birdsong. At the start, you can visit the basilica in Paray-le-Monial; halfway through, why not pop into the riding centre?
Note: There are many variations on this walk if you take a map with you.

Description of the walk

Park at the start of Parc du Moulin Liron opposite the Basilica of Paray-le-Monial.

(S/E) Head south-east along the path running parallel to the road, then join the Greenway.

(1) Turn right onto it and follow it along the canal until you reach thefirst bridge.

(2) Cross the canal via this bridge and join the D480 opposite; this is the Route de Guichard. Follow it past the level crossing until you reach a Y-junction.

(3) Turn right onto Chemin de la Rue and you’ll come to another level crossing.

(4) Cross it to continue along Chemin de la Rue, reaching the hamlet of La Rue.

(5) Carry on straight ahead until the end of the tarmac section, where you’ll find a house.

(6) Take the path that follows on to enter the Bois du Bouchat. On leaving the woods, you’ll reach a crossroads with several directions.

(7) Take the path on the right and continue along this wide, almost flat track. Ignore the hamlet of Sur Chaumes on the right and, a few metres further on, you will reach the Bouchat crossroads.

(8) Turn left, cross the Ruisseau de l'Étang and rejoin a tarmac section at the hamlet of Bois Clair.

(9) Continue along the tarmac road. Enter Bois Clair and, following a straight stretch, reach a multi-way junction.

(10) Carry on straight ahead onto Chemin des Brosses Rondes. Continue along the dirt track, keeping to the left. Reach the junction with Chemin de Romainville.

(11) Turn left and you will soon reach a crossroads at the entrance to the village of Le Bourg.

(12) Turn right, pass the town hall before reaching the village hall.

(13) Cross the road, then walk alongside the village hall and continue straight ahead along Chemin des Bessieres. In the La Bessière area, at the end of the path, turn right onto the footpath that follows it. Further on, in the fields, you’ll reach a Y-junction.

(14) Turn right onto Chemin des Cadolles and join the D10.

(15) Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead to reach Rue de Troncy.

(16) Turn left onto it. Pass between the buildings before reaching the hamlet of Troncy. Walk down to the junction with the Route du Moulin des Vaux, where the riding centre is located.

(17) Turn right and head down to the Rivière de l'Arconce. Take the footbridge to reach a peaceful spot.

(18) Head back in the opposite direction and return to the junction with Rue de Troncy, which you passed earlier.

(16) Continue straight ahead to the War Memorial on the edge of the D10.

(19) Turn left and continue to the next junction, at the Ferme de l'Intendance, indicated on a sign.

(20) Turn right onto Rue de Romainville, a long straight road, to return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(11) Head straight on, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, and continue to the Bouchat crossroads.

(8) Keep left now, passing close to the houses at Le Bouchat and then following those at Le Rogabodot. Cross the Ruisseau de Guichard before reaching Chemin du Moulin Grillet.

(21) Turn right onto this path. Reach the mill, then head due north to reach a Y-junction.

(22) Turn right onto Rue Grillet Guichard and head towards a railway bridge.

(23) Go under this bridge and continue to the D979; turn right onto it with great care for about 200 m to reach the bridge over the canal you crossed on the way out.

(2) Follow the route from the outward journey to the left, in the opposite direction, to return to the car park at Parc du Moulin Liron (S/E).
