From the Comte de Falicon tram stop to St Charles via the Canal de Gairaut

This walk is a variation on the second stage of the four-stage tour of the hills of Nice. It allows you to shorten this second stage slightly and admire the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez and the Monastery of Cimiez. Starting from the Comte de Falicon tram stop, you first walk along the Place de la Fontaine du Temple and cross the Maurice Mouchan Garden and the new Parc du Ray. After crossing Avenue du Ray, you reach Parc Chambrun from the south and, via the Saint-Maurice district, the Vieux Chemin de Gairaut and theGRP® Les Collines de Nice, which climb northwards. Much of the walk then follows the Canal de Gairaut eastwards and descends due south towards Nice through the Quatre Chemins district. Finally, you cross the Jardin des Arènes to reach the Monastery of Cimiez and head down to the Pasteur University Hospital to catch the tram either at Pasteur or Saint-Charles.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour des collines de Nice en quatre étapes

(S/E) Walk along Place de la Fontaine du Temple and cross the Jardin Maurice Mouchan and the new Parc du Ray. Exit the park to the south and turn left onto Avenue Ernest Lairolle.

(10) Enter the Jardin des Arènes. Turn left at the three-way junction to cross it, keeping in the same direction, and arrive at the Monastère de Cimiez car park. Turn left, cross Place Jean-Paul II and continue for about fifty metres.

(11) Take the steps on the right, cross the Voie Romaine and take the steps on the other side, then rejoin the Voie Romaine and follow it to the left. Before the hairpin bend, take the steps on the right which serve as a shortcut to come out in front of the Pasteur University Hospital and the tram stop, or continue on to Saint-Charles by crossing the Paillon (E).

A beautiful urban route with sections through town and sections away from the noise. No particular difficulties, just a good climb up to the Gairaut canal. Note the small shrine by the canal with a very pretty anonymous poem in memory (probably) of a loved one who has passed away.

The quality is very uneven throughout.
The start through the parks is very good.
The mandatory climb via the main path isn’t pleasant.
I’m surprised the route doesn’t make the detour to the Gairaut waterfall.
The route along the canal, even when quiet, is very pleasant with some lovely views.
The descent is mostly on the road and rather long, despite a few views rated between 6 and 10.
The arena and the Matisse Museum make this route interesting again.

If you’re not doing back-to-back tram journeys, it’s better to catch it at Pasteur.
There is nothing of interest for walkers or tourists between Pasteur and Saint-Charles.

The climb is steep all the way to the canal, but the views of the town make it all worthwhile.
Please note that thesecond section of the path at Avenue Duplay is closed. Take the detour via the hairpin bend in the road.
Thank you for this route.

A walk chosen by… coincidence: I’d read a publication from the City of Nice this week (https://www.nice.fr/uploads/media/defaul...). Essential reading and a happy coincidence, as water is a key theme for reflecting on Nice: the ‘Rimiez’ route is therefore very timely. However, given this theme, it seemed appropriate to alter the route from the start to point 3, opting instead for an alternative via Gairaut and Fouont-SantaàRay and Chambrun. Here it is:
Start: ‘Henri Sappia’ terminus. Then north, towards Joseph Saqui and the roundabout. Then the D14 towards Falicon/Levens/Gairaut. Then, after the bend, left onto ‘Chemin de la Séréna’. Then further up on the right, the ‘Raccourci de la Croix’, leading to Saint-Sauveur Church (remarkable fresco restoration + ‘Médecin’ cemetery...). Just above, the Gairaut waterfall. Finally, follow Avenue de Gairaut to reach point 3 of the original route, at the Autobus bar and restaurant. The rest of the route is magnificent, except that the water in the canal is missing!...
In any case, whether as an alternative or not, this route allows one to observe the enduring presence of so many of Nice’s local lanes, some still accessible, but (too?) often swallowed up by urban development...
Nostalgia for an agrarian world?...
