Drakelow walks

This Staffordshire stroll visits the site of the largest non-nuclear explosion in the world - the Fauld Crater. It is an easy walk and offers an interesting diversion for an hour or so.

The walk visits sites in Derby associated with the planning of the rebellion, and the trial and execution of the Pentrich rebels. This is Walk 15 of the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution group.

Walk through the small market town of Market Bosworth, a stroll by the canal, and a walk through fields that may have been fought over in the Battle of Bosworth; the last significant battle of the war of the roses in 1485.

Starting at Marquis Drive, the free parking is perfect for this round trip walk. Crossing beautiful forestry land, this walk is perfect for those who want to capture a glimpse of wildlife but also staying shaded under the tall trees. By having the Visitor centre as the half way point, the café provides the perfect pit stop for a cake and a coffee. After a short walk around the fields of Birches Valley, it’s time to head back. On the walk back you can either veer off to the left of the ponds for a more secluded and quiet walkway (as per this route) or stick to the path you ventured down before. As you get closer to your starting point, there is a steep hill that can take some time if you’re not used to a slightly more strenuous walk. But, once you are at the top, it is time to take in some history and walk the old grounds of the RAF base of Marquis Drive. Signs around the walk tell you all about the base and what used to be in the fields surrounding you.

This circular walk brings you to visit Ockbrook Morvian Settlement, the remains of Dale Abbey, Hermit's Wood, The Hermitage cave "troglodyte", and beautiful views of Derby countryside. This walk has several wooden stiles and steep steps. It also crosses horse and stoke fields so please keep dogs under control.

This is a short urban walk around the centre of Ilkeston which traces the connections of the town to the Pentrich Rising of 1817. In the early 1800s Ilkeston was a village of 2000 people. William Felkin, born here in 1795, a framework knitter or stockinger, became mayor of Nottingham and a respected historian. He recalled that ‘the streets were dirty and unpaved’ and ‘noted the ‘squalid wretchedness of their abodes’, many ‘little better than huts inside or outside.This is Walk 23 of the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution group.

A surprisingly rural walk between two stations on the Coventry to Nuneaton line. The route starts at Bermuda Park on the southern outskirts of Nuneaton and follows the Coventry Canal to Marston Junction before field paths bring you to the town of Bedworth.

Lovely walk through one the Peak District's most famous dales, the beautiful village of Alstonfield, finishing with a traverse around Bunster Hill. This is a great walk on a sunny winter's day as the sun shines into Dovedale most of the day.

This walk captures many of the highlights of southern Dovedale in the Peak District National Park. Starting from near Thorpe Cloud, the walk takes the high level route, avoiding the crowds and provides dramatic views across the valley to both Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

In 1817 Heanor was a small settlement next to Heanor Hall and estate, where most were miners in shallow ‘bell pits’, quarrymen and domestic framework stocking knitters. Men from the area were to join the rebels as they marched from South Wingfield and Pentrich on 10th June 1817. This is Walk 10 of the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution group.

From the market town of Bedworth this trail takes you on field paths to the Coventry Canal, up to Marston Junction and back via the Ashby Canal and the village of Bulkington.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Ripley was a smaller town than Pentrich, but it played an important part in the Pentrich Revolution. There was much support here for reform and many joined the rebels’ march. This is Walk 8 of the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution group.

They were to stop for refreshment here at the Junction Navigation Inn, now the Great Northern public house, before continuing their march towards Eastwood. After visiting the Butterley Works, the rebels continued their march through the night of the 9th June 1817 towards Nottingham. At Codnor they sought refreshment and shelter from the rain in public houses and continued their search for weapons, being joined by those from Ripley, Heage, Swanwick and Alfreton.
