Espagnac-Sainte-Eulalie - Sauliac-sur-Célé

The twenty-eighth stage of the Camino de Santiago. A truly beautiful stage that winds through the Célé Valley. As you follow the river, the rocky cliffs open up to reveal their dark caves, pretty villages, cave dwellings and mills. The Célé Valley undulates along a route that is both wild and poetic, and is sure to fill you with wonder!

Description of the walk

(S) Head north-west towards the village of Espagnac-Sainte-Eulalie. Turn left and pass under the archway to admire the priory and, if you wish, stock up on supplies at the lodge, then pass under the archway again and head left. Cross the Célé to reach the D41, then turn right towards Corn , taking care on the main road.

(1) At the first junction, turn left towards Pailhès. Continue for a few dozen metres, then turn left to begin the climb towards the ridge and reach the relay mast. Continue straight on along the ridge. At the junction in a bend in the path, turn left and arrive at a crossroads in the hamlet of Le Causse.

(2) Head left, continuing along the ridge. Pass the Château des Anglais, then the Portail (stone archway), and begin the descent to the D38 at Mas de Bessac.

(3) Turn left and cross the village of Brengues; at the bend, leave the D38 and continue straight on. At the next bend, turn right and rejoin the D38. Refreshments available at a grocery and bakery in the village.

(4) Cross the road and continue straight on. After the left-hand bend, turn right and leave the village to begin a climb up to the ridge. Continue to the Fontaine de la Heath.

(5) Turn right then head west to reach a large crossroads.

(6) First turn right then left and head south-west just before the fenced-off pumping station. Join the D13 and follow it downhill to reach a magnificent viewpoint and the Egyptian cross.

(7) Continue carefully down the D13 until you reach the hairpin bend.

(8) Shortly afterwards, turn right onto the path leading down towards Saint-Sulpice until you reach the junction with the road coming from the town hall.

(9) Continue straight on towards Mas de Cambou. On this stretch, you will pass through the hamlet of Les Roques, consisting of semi-troglodyte houses. This hamlet is sure to charm you with its unspoilt authenticity and exceptional setting. After walking alongside a cliff on your right, don’t miss the path that veers off to the left.

(10) Leave the wide path and continue south-west into the Combe Vidal on theGR®651.

(11) At the fork, head right towards Pech Merlu on the path of the same name and continue to the junction with the D17.

(12) At the cross, turn right, continue to the fork and take the D17 on the left for a few metres towards Cahors.

(13) About ten metres past the junction, turn left onto the small grassy, tree-lined path heading south-west. The path turns south-south-west then south and crosses another path.

(14) Ignore thePR® path branching off to the left and continue southwards until you reach the Grotte du Facteur at the junction with a small road.

(15) Turn left and keep heading south-east until you reach the junction with the D14, the Pailhès road. Turn left onto the D14 and continue until you reach the hairpin bend.

(16) At the entrance to Mas de Miraudel, continue straight on towards La Dévèze
to reach a horse farm (cross on the left).

(17) Continue along theGR®651heading west and pass to the right of Mas de Picarel before reaching a fountain and the hamlet of Les Combes Basses.

(18) Turn left, then right about ten metres further on to begin the climb towards Les Combes de Oungles. Continue to the T-junction.

(19) Turn left onto the tarmac road, then after 400 m, head right until you reach the next T-junction. Turn right and continue to the crossroads.

(20) Cross the junction to the left and follow the road heading south-west, following theGR®651signposts. Continue for about 500 m through the heath until you reach Mas Del Rey at a crossroads.

(21) Turn left onto the Mas de Rey road and continue to the junction signposting a campsite.

(22) Head for theGR®651, veering towards the middle path, in the direction of Le Vieux Sauliac. Begin a steep descent due south until you reach the junction after a right-hand bend at Vieux Sauliac.

(23) Leave theGR®651and turn left towards Sauliac-sur-Célé. After a few metres, leave the tarmac road and take the path down Rue la Viste.

(24) Pass the cemetery on your left and turn right. Walk past the town hall and continue westwards along the Les Farges road until you find a small path on the left which leads you, after carefully crossing the D41, to Sauliac-sur-Célé beach (E) where you will find a place to camp.
Please note: check the weather forecast for the night. If thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast, you can also camp at the picnic area near the cemetery.

Refreshments available at the start, in the lodge, and in the village of Brengues (3)
Wild camping on the beach at Sauliac-sur-Célé or at the picnic area near the cemetery (drinking water point).
There are plenty of picnic tables and drinking water points along the route.
