The Margueritte Division March

During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the sacrifice of the Chasseurs d’Afrique of the Margueritte Division earned the admiration of William I, who remarked, “Ah! What brave men.” Follow in their footsteps and discover the countryside and battlefields of the Sedan region.

Description of the walk

Start from the Town Hall Square (car park).

(S/E) Follow the D205, keeping the town hall on your left, and immediately turn right onto the Grande-Rue, which climbs towards the church. Go round the building on the left and take thefirst right, the Rue de l’Harmonie.

(1) At the T-junction, turn left into Rue des Braves Gens. Atthe first junction, go straight on and, at the next junction, turn right onto Route de Givonne towards the civil cemetery. At the Fork in the road, veer right and walk alongside the cemetery on your left. Stay on Route de Givonne and ignore the paths branching off to the left. You will come to a crossroads near the German memorial.

(2) Continue slightly to the left and follow a wide path marked in red and white (GR®14) towards the east. At the junction (elevation 282), leave the marked path and continue straight ahead. Pass by the base of a telecommunications pylon.

(3) Once you reach the Garenne farm, first turn left then right onto a path that leads through the forest. Ignore the turn-offs to the left and head towards a meadow.

(4) Then turn right. Walk southwards and stay on the edge of the forest for about 800 m.

(5) You’ll come out onto a wide path at a hairpin bend; follow it to the right to climb back up onto the plateau. Ignore the side paths and you’ll reach a junction directly beneath a power line.

(6) Turn right here and, after about 50 metres, turn left. At the junction in a residential area, continue straight on for about 100 metres.

(7) At the crossroads, turn sharply right and head uphill. At the junction at the top of the hill, turn right again. At the next junction, turn left.

(8) At the junction immediately ahead, continue straight on for about thirty metres. Take thefirst path on the right and follow the edge of a wood on your left (a place called Le Terme). At the corner of the wood, turn left and stay on the edge. Pass under a power line and continue west-south-west until you reach a junction in the middle of the fields.

(9) Then turn right, uphill. You will come out onto a road; follow it to the left until you reach the Mémorial des Chasseurs d’Afrique.

(10) Take the road on the left (this is Rue des Braves Gens again) and walk past a large military cemetery on your right. The road then curves sharply to the right. Ignore a turn-off on the right and walk past a small military cemetery on your left. Stay on Rue des Braves Gens and you will soon reach an intersection you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn left, go round the church and follow the Grande Rue. At the end, turn right and you will immediately come to the Place de la Mairie (S/E).

A very interesting route, both for the variety of the landscapes and for its historical significance (commemorative monuments and military cemeteries from the 1870 war)
