Access: From Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, head towards the Col du Mont Cenis. Shortly afterwards, take the small road on the right which leads, 6km further on, to the Col du Petit Mont Cenis. Park at the end of the road after the Ferme des Coulours.
(S/E) Follow the track heading south-east. After two hairpin bends, it joins the return path from the Lacs Perrins.
(1) Continue along the track to the end; it runs along the side of the Vallon d’Ambin, then joins the Savine stream at the EDF water intake.
(2) Follow the path up the right bank of the stream. You’ll come to some ruins on your left; cross the small stream on the right to reach the next junction.
(3) Continue straight on, climbing up the long Vallon de Savine along the path, keeping to the right bank of the stream. The lake lies behind the peak of the outcrop visible at the bottom of the valley.
(4) At Lac de Savine, follow the right bank to the valley floor. A gentle climb leads to the Col du Clapier.
(5) From the pass, head back in the opposite direction and return to the crossroads just before the ruins.
(3) Continue to the right; the path follows the curve of the mountain to its base, then climbs up through the rocks. Almost at the summit, a handrail helps you navigate a tricky but not particularly difficult section. Continue then almost level and reach the upper and lower Lacs Perrin.
(6) Below the lake, ignore the path branching off to the right which leads to the Refuge du Petit Mont Cenis and cross the stream flowing from the lake’s spillway. Continue along the path, which quickly turns into a narrow track. This passes under a power line and joins the track taken almost at the start.
(1) Turn right and head back down to the car park below (S/E).
. The crossing of the valley is superb but a little long.
