Maute House in the Gey valley

A walk through a wild valley, once inhabited for two centuries. An untouched forest, hyacinths, mosses, ruined houses, and a black rock from which a river with crystal-clear waters flows.

Description of the walk

After Sarrance, take the road through the Gey valley to its end point beyond the Gey farm. Do not block the turning bridge.

(S/E) Follow the path along the hillside, which descends at times, to a first footbridge.

(1) Ignore the climb towards the Lahouratate house and follow the river (ruined house).

(2) Reach a second footbridge and continue up the valley to an easy ford.

(3) The path is now better signposted (yellow markings) and winds its way up to a ridge at the Maute house (ruins).

(4) Head back down the same way to the Gey farm (S/E).

The route is very scenic and easy to follow up to point 3, where you have to wade across the stream. There are a few sections where the path has collapsed, but they’re not dangerous.
After that, it can sometimes be tricky to find the way, and the final stretch isn’t particularly rewarding, even though the forest is lovely; there’s no real view at the end.
To park, you need to drive well past Gey Farm; there are parking spaces by the side of the road 100 metres further on.

I walked this route 25 years ago, but the path is now closed after the first footbridge.
Rediscovered with great pleasure
Path well maintained by hunters and the last remaining residents. Picking wild garlic.
