(4) Continue along a forest path that winds between woods and meadows and pass under high-voltage power lines. You will arrive at the start of the discovery trail.

It’s impossible to go wrong – the route is well-marked and, what’s more, the whole path is extremely well signposted with small yellow signs featuring a drawing of a black kite.

I walked this trail on a Friday, so there were hardly any other people about, though I imagine it must be busier at the weekend.

If you keep quiet in the forest sections, you might be lucky enough, like me, to spot lots of animals, particularly does and stags, and of course kites and a multitude of forest birds....

The view over the Dordogne Gorges is magnificent. The waterfall is also very beautiful.

It’s also worth noting that there’s a small grocery shop near the car park at the start of the trail where you can buy food, including artisan bread to make tasty sandwiches, and there are two picnic tables just past point 5.
