Start : Park in Little Town - a tiny parking next to the Tea Room. Grid ref. NY 234 196
(D/A) Exit the car park on the right and take the road through the village. A hundred metres further, a path rises to the left. Follow it.
(1) At a Y-junction, take a sharp left turn and follow the well-defined path which follows more or less a contour line.
(2) Reach a junction. Take the right-hand path which climbs more steeply this time - the path is clearly visible with a few cairns are along the way.
(3) After 700m or so, turn left (North-East) onto a wide grassy track through the ferns, to reach the ridge. Walk another hundred meters Northward and you'll reach the summit of Cat Bells.
(4) At the summit, enjoy splendid views over Keswick and Derwent Water. Take the same path back down and at the junction continue straight on. Make steady progress - it's quite uphill at first - until you reach a junction.
(5) Both tracks will lead you back to the same place - we've taken the right-hand one, which follows the edge of the ridge more closely.
(6) Cross Maiden Moor without any particular difficulty until you finally reach the summit of High Spy, marked by a large cairn.
(7) From the summit, the path is a little chaotic, so trust following the cairns. Descend to a pass at the foot of the imposing Dale Head. Near the pass is a small Dalehead Tarn lake.
(8) As you reach the pass, bear right and take the good stony path North down into the valley. There are several beautiful waterfalls on your left as you descend. Continue down until you reach the valley bottom and an easy track.
(9) Leave another track on your left, which crosses the torrent, and continue straight on until you reach the small road and Little Town village (D/A).
